The ’70s had some great music. Can’t deny it. The ’60s ushered in something new, but the ’70s did something with it. It was a great decade. A great time to be alive and without the cares of adulthood. I started the decade a couple of years into elementary school and ended it halfway through high school. What a time for barefoot summers.
I note 1978 because that was the year Earth, Wind & Fire released the single Fantasy. I was doing a random YouTube stream-of-fancy (a rabbit hole with a bit more purpose) and I stumbled on Leonid & Friends’ recent version of it. Brought back some memories that I wouldn’t expect many to have, but still, if you were around back then, at least you would’ve heard it and liked it. You could barely help it with Earth, Wind & Fire.
I listen today and I can hear the ’70s. I literally feel younger for some reason…
Here’s the original version…
This really stokes the memories. Great observation. What I loved about groups like Earth, Wind and Fire was their inclusion of brass in their music because I started playing the trumpet in 5th grade. By the time I was in
Marching band we were doing arrangements by famed Ohio State alum John Tatgenhorst. They were an homage to the big pop bands of the day. I loved playing his stuff on the field, in concert band, and in our stage band – loved playing gigs at conventions and banquets in the stage band. I would also have to acknowledge Chicago, Tower of Power, and perhaps my favorite, Blood, Sweat, and Tears. Great post, Bob. I’m glad you didn’t bring up the Bee Gees in touting the 70’s music…
