Tuesday Random

The last couple of days have been a bit of a wild ride. Nothing critical, just mentally and physically exhausting. Making everything run as smoothly as my typical standard demands seems to be taking a bit more work than usual. Part of me says than it used to. I’m still good at it, and I still love doing it, but oof. It’s tiring sometimes.

I think I used to be able to press through things a lot better. I could go long periods without vacations or days off. Never bothered me, really. But now i’m understanding the usefulness of time away from work. I guess I’m mortal after all. Even Wolverine ran out of juice at a point.

Awesome trailer. Excellent movie.

Lucky for us all I’m not the Wolverine. And fortunate for me, I do have a pretty nice stretch coming up here for a few weeks, with some much-expected, much-welcome visitors on their way, starting with Sarah tomorrow.

Micha and I just finished a pretty good series on Netflix — The Night Agent. It’s got a few weak spots (the kind where a conscientious storyteller would be saying “Why don’t they just get in the car and drive there?” — obvious stuff like that. Maybe a bit heavy on car chases. Maybe a slight lack of creativity in problem-solving — i.e., “Someone’s a problem? Shoot them.” being the solution to far too many situations. and it might have worked better as an 8-part series instead of 10. But overall, a pretty good thriller. Lots of intrigue and moments where you just didn’t know who to trust. I give it a recommendation.

Well, the baseball season is underway — just a few games in, and I think the new rules are paying off. A pitch clock keeps the game moving. Bigger bases put the runners just a few inches closer to a stolen base (and those number are way up already). The pitcher can only “make two moves toward a pitch series “disengage” during a pitch series — that is, step off the rubber, to include throwing to a base. And they got rid of the shift (where infielders load up on one side of the diamond based on a hitter’s chances of hitting it in any particular direction.

I’ve watched the Brewers play a few games, and, quite encouragingly, they’re not relying on the home run to score all fo their runs. Sure, they still have heavy hitters, but they also have speed and more aggressive offensive play going for them. It all looks to be shaping up as a good season. I even watched the Cubs play the Reds today. I used to watch other teams and enjoy the games quite a bit (that was the year the Cubs won the Series). Looks like I might get to do that again this year, and I think a big contributor to that is that the games aren’t as long and drawn out as they have been in recent years. I used to watch replays and condensed games just to skip the boring parts. Don’t have to do that as much anymore. I think I’m getting past the “let’s wait and see” stage pretty quickly on this one…
