It seems that all I’m doing these days is finding music, but you should know that there are sometimes rabbit holes that continue to produce their rabbits.
This particular case is a fairly obscure indie group (yeah, redundant) from California that I found when I was listening to NPR (and that’s what I mean by “obscure” – if you hear about them from NPR…). They were talking about their album Sumday, which was released in 2003, so I know it had to be quite a while ago.
I picked up the CD shortly after and really liked a lot of the songs. They all have their quirk for sure, and “The Group who Couldn’t Say” is a great example…
Or one of my favorites (and I think the video is hilarious), “Now It’s On.”
“Stray Dog and the Chocolate Shake” — the title itself should tell you enough. And when it opens with lines like, “Supervisor guy turns off the factory lights so the robots have to work in the dark…” Well, you know it’s going somewhere interesting.
But perhaps my favorite, and to me rather indescribable, is “The Warming Sun.” I mean, who comes up with words like “overmisunderstood” for a song? Come to think of it though, it’s a perfect word for a song…
"I haven't been that bad, but I haven't been that good. Overmisunderstood. You know I wish I really could, enjoy the warming sun, enjoy a warm someone, end the need to hide, way alone inside..."
I’ll leave it at that…
