I mentioned a few days ago that I wasn’t really getting into Tortilla Flat. Just too flippant…it lacked meat. So I put in for Of Mice and Men, and as soon as I got it (on Libby) I dumped the Flat and started right in.
I enjoyed the style, but if you know anything about the book, it’s not exactly a happy read. There’s a bit of tension, and you know it’s coming…and I’ll leave it there. Anyone who knows the story, knows. Still, I enjoyed the imagery, and that’s a big part of what I enjoy about a books. A good one is something I can nearly taste.
One other thing about Of Mice and Men. It’s led to a rather delightful discovery. After reading it, I’ve come back around to Tortilla Flat, and find that I’m enjoying it a lot more. Yeah, it’s not as deep and meaty, but the stories it tells are funny and interesting. It’s also quite a bit longer than Of Mice and Men (by two or three times), so I’ll have to renew it, but I think I’ll make it through now. Didn’t think I would before. That’s the journey.
