A history lesson.
There’s this old guy named Steve Martin who’s been around for a long time (he was probably graduating high school around the time I was born). He wrote comedy for an ancient TV show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, which was quite funny, but a little bit before the time that I understood some of its humor.
In the ’70s, Martin exploded in popularity with a bizarre comedy act that kids my age at the time thought absolutely hilarious. As a matter of fact, when I was in high school, our summer league softball team was called “Fred’s Bank.” Steve Martin fans know it. At least us old guys. Martin stopped doing stand-up decades ago to focus on a movie career and his music. But if you look at his old stuff, you might…might get it. It’s stood the test of time with me, but that could just as well be more in line with the nostalgia of hearing it again. Still, I don’t think so.
Anyway, today as I was wandering around with the dog, this song came to mind. It still cracks me up when he spells it…
I saw him perform live in an open air venue near Madison about 1979. He did Cat Juggling.
