Some months ago I wrote about my favorite Beatles song, along with a short commentary saying how good a drummer Ringo Starr really was. When I listened to them 50 years ago, I didn’t think so at all. We had the likes of Keith Moon and John Bonham showing us what a real rock drummer was (if you don’t know them, look them up — Bonham especially was a genius. Moon was just crazy).
Put Ringo Starr up against those two and you might think he doesn’t belong.
But Ringo was something else. He was a man who knew what the song needed. I talked about it before when I wrote about A Day in the Life, and I was reminded in listening to another great song that displayed his talents — Strawberry Fields Forever. He moved that song.
A while back, I stumbled upon this video of a drummer explaining it better. Give it a look, and then go back and pay attention to Ringo…
Ringo is my favorite Beatle.
