Another History Lesson

I was 10 years old when Jim Croce died. That’ll be 50 years ago next September. Of course, I probably never knew of him while he was alive, but I do remember hearing him later. I’m sure at least one of my sisters — probably Jean — had some of his music.

And it was (and still is) wonderful music. He only lived to be 30, and only had one number one hit while he was alive (and another after he died), but a lot of his music was so good. Face it, though — there was a lot of other good music out there too in the early 70s.

But Jim Croce filled a beautiful place with his music. So simple, yet, so deep. Calm, but emotional. The occasional raucous romp. Great stories.

I heard him again after quite some time because Rick Beato did a piece on his song, “Operator,” speculating as to whether younger generations can even get some of the older songs. And maybe he’s right. What’s an “operator?” Or even a “dime?” Yeah, we’re not that far removed…but it’s only a matter of time.

Anyway, a challenge. Listen for the story. It’s only slightly heartbreaking. His death, so much more so. We can only imagine the music he would’ve made if he’d lived even a few years longer, let alone a full life…
