*The* Movie Recommendation

Yes. Not just any movie recommendation. The movie recommendation.

Before COVID, Micha and I would go to the movies quite often. Every couple of weeks, a new movie would come out and we’d head over to the local theater, grab our caramel popcorn (best at Lotte Cinema), and check it out.

Of course, COVID changed that. Theaters were off-limits. And even now that they’re back, they just don’t have the offerings they used to. Thankfully, Netflix and Amazon and Disney all stepped in. Who can forget Tiger King? Well, probably a lot of people haven’t given it a thought in a couple of years. Too much else to see since then…but maybe not enough. These days, I can’t find anything good on any of these channels.Yeah, they have the occasional hit. Surprisingly Korean actually. Squid Game and Extraordinary Attorney Woo come to mind (and maybe, more locally, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha). But even the likes of Squid Game are long gone right now, as is the much more recent Woo.

I’m surprised how hard it is to find some of the “classics.” For me, that might be something like Jaws, which remains an incredible movie that has aged well. Not like Bill Murray’s “classics” — the juvenile genre — Stripes, Caddy Shack, Ghostbusters…that kind of stuff. The kind of movie where you buy the DVD, then maybe watch it 20 years later and wonder why.

Not so with Jaws. And maybe not as classic, but still good, I pulled Memphis Belle off the shelf the other day and gave it a look and didn’t mind. Although the thought did cross my mind — why was the commanding officer at the base from which the Belle flew always wearing a dress uniform? Still, a good story, well told, well-filmed. I still liked it.

And when I look at the movie recommendation, another from the 90’s comes to mind (Memphis Belle came out in 1990). Muppet Treasure Island is not just the best Muppet movie, it’s one of the best movies you will ever watch. It pretty much nails it on every count — and a musical to some extent to boot! The songs are as good as ever — and, true to Muppet form, extremely clever.

Do yourself a favor. Watch the movie. I have the DVD, but It’s streaming on Disney+.

I love Muppet treasure island!

Did we tell you we saw the prop plane for Memphis Belle at the air museum in Palm Springs?
