A bad feeling…II

As a follow-up to yesterday, I stumbled upon this fairly simple and interesting video this morning. I guess the algorithms have caught me and know what I’m looking into. Gonna have to go VPN-incognito in the future if I want a more pure method of looking for information.

Still, there’s this video, in which the speaker touches upon the very issues of which I wrote just yesterday…plus he points out the benefits of nuclear (which, sadly, he mispronounces). I have long thought that any solution has to include another 50 years of the most up-to-date nuclear technology we can muster if we want to bridge the gap to any possible true renewable energy source. As it stands, I’m not entirely optimistic. It seems that the reasons governments are pushing electric cars all to point to “political” and not to anything actually practical. They think electric cars are the “magic bullet” that everyone understands and is on board with. The stereotype that “all of the tree-huggers drive Priuses” is powerful, but I must say, a sound assessment of the situation has never been the tree-huggers’ strong suit. And so, electric cars.

In reality, and again, much to our detriment, the human species is given to symbolistic psuedo-virtue. “If I’m driving an electric car, I’m doing my part.” But it seems quite likely that driving an electric car is something akin to “liking” the right kinds of social media posts. It really does nothing, but it makes us feel good enough about ourselves that the “nothing” doesn’t strike us as anything worth worrying about.

In reality, I’m open to a lot. I’m always hoping for reasonable and well-thought-out solutions. But until we can get to a point where the majority of us are moving in the same direction (re: cars, fossil fuels, nuclear, solar, wind, coal, etc.), a lot of stupid stuff is gonna be happening. Let’s just hope we run out of the stupid before we run out of time…

Interesting video, and here’s a few comments:

1. About 20 years ago, I declared the greenest automobile is the one in the used car lot. Nobody cared.

2. I’ve been called a tree hugger, and subscibe to some of thise ideals. But, I’ve never understood why people are anti nuclear energy. We discovered the potential, and we are able to manage the potential risks.

3. All packaging for everything should be required to meet a simple recyclable capability. Develop new manufacturing processes to reduce/eliminate waste. Quit packaging my purchases in waste.

4. Imports should be required to follow receiving entities labor standards. I shouldn’t fund a child working in any country if it is considered wrong in my backyard.

That’s probably enough for now.
