Saturday 80: To the Seawall

Seawalls can be a bit boring (Hwaseong — about 6 miles of flat and straight). And challenging (Asan — heavy traffic, narrow shoulder). But they get you places too. Interesting places, like Sapgyoho with it’s huge Ferris Wheel.

There’s this massive seawall to the northwest — the Sihwa seawall — that’s been a bit intriguing to me. I’d driven it several years ago. There are a lot of seafood places on both ends of it. But now I wanted to bike it. So I put together a course, and set out with Joon for an 85-mile ride this morning to see what I could see.

And I must say, it was neither boring, nor challenging. Sure, it’s nearly 7 miles long, but it’s got its own trail, and the views are decent. Good skyline. Good ocean. Some wind turbines. And it was a nice day for it. Quite a bit of up and down (Koreans call it “Camel-back”) on the backside of the course, but I made it through the whole thing without hurting (which was a problem with some of our earlier rides this year). I was (and still am) however, quite worn out. Fell asleep on the sofa some time before 5 and woke up at 8:30. Missed dinner. Tired, but satisfied.

On the seawall. Not even halfway yet.
There’s a rest area along the route.
A fascinating place, dedicated to Korean history, independence, and the settlement of Koreans in eastern Russia.
And it’s in the middle of nowhere on a dirt road.
Our old friend, Jebudo, from a bluff to its northeast. Tide was out, but we didn’t want to add the miles — still had 30 to go.
Goofing around near ROKMC HQ
Rice is going in. Almost home.
The traditional lemon bar at the end of the ride. So refreshing.
