Monday Musings

Tired out today. And no wonder after a rather active weekend.  Still, I didn’t see all that I wanted to see, and next weekend’s rides are formulating in my mind. I think more than anything I just need a break. A reset. A time when I step away from everything and refresh my mind. COVID’s kind of sucked the fun out of a lot of things.

But there’s a light there somewhere. And it might be at the end of a tunnel. I think the stats are settling down a bit. More people are getting their shots. People are pretty much used to handling this stuff. I’m waiting for the day the governments just say “This is enough. From here on out, if you get it, you get it. We’re not going to jump through hoops anymore, and we’re not going to make you jump through hoops either.” Like the flu. And to tell you the truth, from what I understand, if you’ve had your shots, it’s far less severe.

I figure by next spring, we’ll be there.

I was listening to a podcast today and heard a great quote from Martin Luther – “God does not need your good works, but your neighbor does.” These wonderful words get to the heart of our frequent misunderstanding. Our works are expressions of love for those around us – as Jesus commanded.

And in the same passage, Jesus tells us to love God with all of our heart.

So how do these two commands manifest in our lives? We love our neighbors with our works. We love God with our worship. We must never say “See what I’m doing for you God! I’m feeding the poor. I’m visiting the sick and imprisoned.” We may as well be saying, “You owe me, God.”

Rather, we should just do, and doing that which is a natural byproduct of our love for God. Not so that he loves us any more. Not so that he owes us. But “so that no one can boast.”

I need more thoughts like this in my life. They’re comforting.

I’ll probably come back to this later and flesh it out.
