You should have seen this coming after a nice long ride just yesterday and this review of the Assos Mille GT Bib Shorts from a few days before. If you read that review, you’d know that it came after only one short ride. So. What were the results of yesterday’s ride? Did they stack up to some of the other bib shorts — especially those who claimed to work for long-haul rides?
And the answer is a resounding, “yes.”
Yet, it isn’t all that simple. Because about a third of the way into the ride, I was a bit bothered. I felt like I couldn’t quite get comfortable. I tried shifting positions on the saddle, and that seemed to help, but I was getting a little concerned that perhaps they wouldn’t hold up for longer rides.
But the proof is in the finishing, and I think that stretch of slight discomfort was no different than what I normally experience at various times in my rides. In other words, “it happens.” It’s the end result though that matters; and I realized at the end of my ride yesterday that I felt quite comfortable…or should I say, I didn’t feel much of anything. I wasn’t getting off the bike with a slight hobble. There were no hot-spots or any soreness to speak of. And I just felt overall tired, but refreshed after the ride.
So yes, the Assos Mille GT bib shorts held up quite well. I can only imagine what their more expensive models that shoot for even more endurance feel like. But of course, there comes a certain level where one has to draw the line, and I think $170 pretty much hits it for now. But I must say, it’s $170 that’s worth it, and I know that over the course of the life of these bib shorts, I’ll certainly get my money’s worth.
