Review: Assos Mille GT Bib Shorts

This is a preliminary review actually. I’ve only worn these Assos Mille GT Bib Shorts on a quick 22-mile ride this evening, so the jury’s still out when it comes to the longer rides.

But I must say, they’re the most comfortable bib shorts I’ve worn. The material is excellent, and the design of the chamois moved well with me. I was only mildly concerned that the medium size would be tight on me — when I did the sizing, I was right on the line between medium and large. But I went with the medium, and I’m not regretting it.

There are plenty of decent bib shorts out there, but these shorts are obviously a cut above my typical short. RedWhite isn’t bad, and at $130, it’s a bit cheaper than the Assos ($170). And it’s good for long rides. But I also think the pad is a little stiff and bulky. I suppose that’s something you can expect from a company that bills itself as specialists in long-distance and endurance kit.

Actually, one of my favorites is the dhb Classic Bib Short, which I picked up on wiggle.com and only costs in the $85 range (as I look right now, they’re on sale for $63). Quite comfortable and sufficient for the mid-range rides (for me, that’s 30-50 miles). I’ve worn them for longer, but usually go with the RedWhites if I know I’m going to be out long. I still have to try the Assos on a long ride, but I’m sure I won’t be disappointed.

Stay tuned…
