Alone is good sometimes…

I love my regular riding partners. We push each other, and chat along the way — never missing any opportunity to shoot a barb or two at each other when the chance arises. But I do have to admit, my best rides these days are when I’m alone. And I think it’s the “we push each other” part that makes the difference. I’m at a point now where I don’t really want to be pushed. I want to explore. I want to take pictures. I want to go as slow as it takes against a strong headwind (as I had this morning), or up a hill.

Thing is, I just can’t keep up with these guys. It’s not so bad when I’m with them individually, but get them together and it’s off to the races. And there I am in the back, struggling to keep up.

So today’s ride had its moments. Like I said, I had a bit of a headwind on the way out (as planned — makes the ride back much easier), and of course it was still a bit chilly at 9AM. But as usual, once I get a bit warmed up; or once I find an interesting detour (like I did about 8 miles in — you’ll see it if you pay attention to the video); or once I take a break and tinker with something (today I adjusted my computer mount) and have a bit of a snack; I’m good to go. And, as usual, I come home feeling so good.

I can use plenty of days like this.

Each human has a speed that is perfect for them. Like a peak gas mileage speed. I feel that when I’m alone I can go EXACTLY at the speed my body and mind want to. I like it very much.
