I’ve been through a few kinds of lube lately. Used to go with White Lightning’s Clean Ride wax lube and it was decent, but the store I’d get it in here in Korea stopped carrying it, so I tried a couple others. I got this weird Norwegian stuff that turned my chain black at one time — a sticky black at that. Then I stumbled upon Rock ‘n’ Roll’s Holy Cow. It claims to clean as you lube. I was a bit skeptical, but decided to give it a try.
I’m usually a bit stingy with lube. I know people who are quite liberal with their lube, but I would pretty much lube link-by-link. I found out soon enough that you can’t do that with Holy Cow. With Holy Cow you have to use quite a bit. It’s base cleans and then it evaporates to leave the lube. It’s still a wet lube, but it doesn’t seem to attract the dirt of other lubes I’ve used, and it wipes down pretty well. My chain stays fairly clean even on some of the dirtier rides, and I don’t mind using plenty of it in that case. It doesn’t seem to hold up in super-wet conditions, but I’ll still take it. I don’t like riding wet that often anyway. Overall I give it good scores. I’ll stick with it as long as the shop carries it.

I’ve been using the Rock and Roll Gold for about a year. Works great. This spring will be the real test because I’m swapping out my chain and cogs. It has been working well on the fat bike but I haven’t had a good opportunity to ride lately because of the polar vortex. Two straight weeks of consistently below zero weather doesn’t lend itself to the bike however the snowmobiles look like they have a nice pack on the river so I’ll probably give that a look tomorrow.
Yeah, Rock n Roll is good stuff. I think I’ll stick with the Holy Cow, but I’ve heard good things about the Gold.
Ice should be pretty thick. Maybe the middle of Poygan will freeze up good and we won’t have as many people going through.
