I am certainly going to follow up on yesterday’s work, but that takes a lot of brain power for me and sometimes I just like to take a little break.
My first (and only?) major arena-sized concert was in the summer of 1982 at Oakland Coliseum. The show started with T-Bone Burnett (who went on to become a major producer), the Clash (thought they were great), and the Who – who of course were pretty good themselves (but I think I liked the Clash better). It was the Who’s first farewell tour.
And Oakland was a great venue. Had a great time. First time I’d ever smelled marijuana – hard to believe, but I’m telling the truth here.
I’m reminded of all of this because I just stumbled back into Peter Frampton this morning while I was just looking around for music I might want to listen to while I worked. Of course at one time or another I owned “Frampton Comes Alive.” I think it was required for anyone who grew up in the 70s. And so as I listened this morning I was reminded of how great a guitarist Frampton was, which led me to just throw on a video of him doing my favorite song of his, Do You Feel like We Do. The live performance I found was in July of ’77 in Oakland, and it’s decent. Kind of fun to think of those days when I could’ve stomached a long hot day in the sun enjoying what has now become classic rock.
Yeah, there are arena shows today. But I tell you, they really don’t make them like this anymore…
And a bonus. An older Frampton doing an incredible job with Lines on my Face…
