Back in September, I wrote an article about my cycling goals over the years. It was the long way around of saying that I’d met the year’s goal of 5,000km with over a quarter of the year left, and I ended it wondering what I should shoot for.
To follow up, I set it at 4,000 miles, and here I am on the 8th of December having passed that. So what’ll it be? I’m thinking 4106.86. That should sound somewhat familiar. I’m one for even numbers, patterns, and just plain having things work out. And since my previous few goals have been 5,000km — 3, 106.86 miles — I can’t be put off by just adding 1,000 miles to that.

And actually, that’s pretty cool, because if you go back to my September article and my rundown of history within it you’d see that I used to impress myself with 1,000 a year. Here I am shooting for 1,000 just in the last three months (having already averaged it every quarter).
I can’t be disappointed with that. Except it leaves me now wondering what’s in store for next year. As I wrote just a couple of days ago, I’ve got to make some lifestyle adjustments so I can bring back a level of enjoyment to my riding that I haven’t experienced for quite some time. Being able to ride up hills without so much difficulty is certainly one of the things to which I most look forward.
So yeah — now what? What’s left? Maybe since I’ve climbed nearly 140,000 feet this year, I should shoot for an elevation goal. How about 200,000? Let’s not get carried away here. Just because I want to be able to climb better doesn’t mean I have to climb.
And besides, I’ve got over three weeks to figure it out…
That’s absolutely outstanding! Meanwhile my goal is to make it out fat biking one more time but 1st I need my bike….ironically it seems to be held up in Bend Oregon
