I have long known that the peninsula to our southwest that holds the towns of Dangjin and Seosan is full of wonderful views and interesting sites. The problem though is that there’s really only one way to get to it (across a two-mile sea wall) and the far side of that way is 25 miles from home. This means that just to do any substantial riding in that area, I’ve got to start and end with 50 miles total. Yesterday’s ride was 76 miles, and we only scratched a small portion of the area. My heat map shows that — there’s a lot of room to roam out there.
I’ve got a solution to that though. At the 25-mile mark there is a nice parking lot, so the plan (someday) is to drive out and launch from there. We’ll see.
In the course of dreaming up routes, I take a lot into consideration, but what’s probably most important is having something to shoot for. I actually do a lot of research when I’m looking for something new, and street view (I mostly use Kakao maps) helps a lot. It’s through street-view that I noticed a little lighthouse at the top of Dangjin, so I set the route out along the coast and brought it back cutting through the peninsula. Overall, it was a great ride. We’re not the kind to put our heads down and go for speed, but rather prefer to stay loose and have a good time. We see a lot more that way, and it’s definitely a lot more fun.
