Saturday 65: Ch’eonan is Never Without its Challenges

I woke up at 1:30 in the morning, not feeling well. That feeling lingered while I prepared for our 4:30AM start, and kind of haunted me for the first hour or two of the ride. Then I was better. Most times it’s that way — not feeing well, but a stretch on the bike and I’m as good as new. Well, as good as I can get.

Still, we did exercise our due amount of caution. I mean, this was Ch’eonan, right? Just about every one of us who’s been through Ch’eonan more than a few times has suffered our share of calamity. And yet, we love the place. At least I do. It’s got a good mix of history and modernity, but laid back enough to be charming. I should probably buckle down and put together a tour of its more obscure corners. It’s also about the distance I can get to and come back from anymore — at least during the summer months.

And that’s where the challenge comes in today. Looking at a weather report that was showing 90 degrees by 11, we really had to be home by then. Unfortunately, it was hot enough to be home by 9 this morning. The humidity made it worse. Soaked through within the first 30 minutes. Hydration of the utmost importance. It was hard getting home…and yet, here I am. And I figure I’ll be ready for another one soon enough, but I’m pretty much done with the longer stuff until the temps can behave…

Pyeongtaek Station around 5AM.
The streets of Ch’eonan can be empty around 6:30AM.
Our main objective — Independence Hall.
Random Temple
Random reservoir.
At the end of the first long, hard climb. Need a break.
I’ve always liked this view.
So do they.
The motley crew.
Goofballs.
Curious.
Says it all….
