A Recommendation: The Humble Skeptic

Billy Joel wasn’t famous in 1973. So when Shane Rosenthal’s father claimed to have see him at a piano bar at the corner of Wilshire and Western in Los Angeles early that year, it makes for an interesting story. And an interesting investigation to see if what his father was saying was true. It’s that story that starts off Rosenthal’s new podcast, The Humble Skeptic.

Rosenthal is the former producer and part-time host of another of my favorite podcasts (and before that, radio show), The White Horse Inn. After 30 years there, last year he set out to start this new project. For me, it’s kind of a double-bonus. His work at White Horse was excellent, and The Humble Skeptic takes that excellence to the next level. But what makes it especially appealing to me is the podcast’s tag line: “Truth isn’t Afraid of Questions.”

What an excellent statement; and something I’ve long believed. Having confidence in one’s faith means not being afraid of honest questions. It means seeking answers by engaging the strongest arguments both for and against one’s side.

And so, I’m excited to have found this podcast, and I recommend it to anyone who’d like to listen to some seriously good apologetic work. If anything, listen to the pilot and hear the rest of the story about Billy Joel. And then hopefully you can start in on his investigation of “Faith” itself…and beyond.
