Saturday Ride: Feb Fifty

It’s time to start cranking up the miles. It’s time to start getting in shape. It’s time to start dropping that winter weight so I’m ready for another good summer.

Knowing we could handle 25 degrees just fine, we decided to set out at 7 this morning. We just hadn’t counted on the fog. Fog in 25-degree weather makes it feel a bit colder. I didn’t notice too much, but Joon was a bit chillier than usual. Looking on the bright side, though, the fog made for some incredibly beautiful sights as it froze on the branches of trees and blades of grass along the way. Well worth it, in my view. I sit here now comfortable and warm, and the chill of the morning is already long forgotten.

The past two weeks, we rode about 37 miles, so (and especially with the early start) 50 didn’t seem unreasonable. Albert rode up from Humphreys to meet us — which would make it 75 miles for him — and we set out on time. We don’t put our heads down and freight-train it like some groups do (we were passed by such a group today). We meander. We sit up. We stop for pictures. We make jokes. We certainly are not averse to exploration. Today’s ride even included some stairs and a venture out onto the ice of a lake for Joon. I’m sure Team Rapha could never imagine…

Home by noon on a Saturday is always a good thing. On the longer summer rides, that means leaving by 5AM. Today, 7 did the trick. We saw three or four groups around 11 when we were close to finishing, but they never saw anything as good as we had just a couple of hours before.

Their loss…

The day starts a bit foggy…
…and stays that way for quite a while.
A couple of aliens?
The day gets more beautiful.
The fog starts to settle and freeze.
More beautiful than you can see in a picture.
Team Revolt.
Fog in its solid form.
Fishing.
Making our way…
The ice…at least close to shore…is thick enough.
Winter lake.
A story.
Self-supported ride.
Leftovers for lunch.

“winter lake” is frame-worthy
