A Day in the Life

I just got done telling you I didn’t listen to a lot of Elvis growing up. Most everything I heard was incidental. But a group that I did listen to (more when I was younger), along with a lot of other people at the time, was the Beatles. It seemed they’d never get old. Even today, their music is still fairly popular in some circles.

One of their greatest albums — some said for many years the greatest album of all time — was Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was a great set of tracks put together and released in 1967. And my favorite track from the album — probably my favorite song by the group among all of them — is “A Day in the Life.” It’s 1967 and they were putting out a song like this. And it still holds up.

A last word: Ringo Starr was underrated. The thing about him is that he knew so perfectly how he fit with the music, even as some thought he had no real talent. But if you listen closely to the drums, you’ll learn that “A Day in the Life” was one of his greatest works.
