Saturday 77: Namhan Sanseong

This is my third time up and over Namhan Sanseong — the UNESCO world cultural heritage site located southeast of Seoul. I thought I’d gone earlier this year, but it turns out I had gone twice last year. Time certainly flies.

Of course the ride did not disappoint in the slightest. The place is still there. It’s still beautiful. It’s still interesting. I really must take Micha for lunch. Maybe on Thanksgiving this week Thursday. As much as I like the chili, perhaps I’ll just get that going for Christmas this year. It’ll actually be a full house…kind of. Sarah and Scott will be here. That means the tree will have to come out of the box. I think I’ve only put it up once in the past 10 years or so…and that on a whim. I do have one concern going for me though this year — it’s November 19th and there’s still no egg nog at the commissary. That really could be a good thing, but I’ve laid up a bottle of Jameson’s and can’t stand the stuff without drowning it in egg nog. Then, it’s a thing of beauty.

But this has little to do with today’s ride (other than giving me ideas for Thanksgiving lunch).

Today’s ride was designed to get Albert up by Seoul. The thing about Albert is that he’s got to cover 11 miles to our 1 to get to our rendezvous point (which we hit near-perfectly this morning, with Albert about 200 meters down the road when we got to the intersection). So any rides that take us all the way to the Han River in Seoul are going to approach 100 miles for him. Today, he got 102 to Joon’s and my 77. Over 56 of his miles were new. Joon and I logged about 8 new miles…mainly because we took the west bank instead of the east bank of the Gyeongan River (the river that flows north from Yongin to eventually meet the Han) coming south.

Ah, but I bore you with the details. It was a great ride, and, as usual, we enjoyed each other’s company and the time went by rather quickly.

I’ve always got to get the early morning shot of this lake on the way north toward the Suwon IC area.
Albert gets a shot of us going around the lake.
Joon’s shot at the top.
For some reason, Albert’s shots are so much better than mine. Suffice it to say, “I was here” (off to the right). I just didn’t take this picture.
I did take this one of the southern exit from the fortress.
And this one down the hill a bit.

A station on the line at Yongin.
Took the river crossing route on the way home.
