Saturday 63: HUmid

An old friend of mine from long ago used to say, “That’s HUge with a capital ‘U’.” I get the word just thinking of it. Well, today was HUmid, and even though we’d resolved to get out early and get back early, it didn’t do much good when we were sopping wet by mile 10. Joon and I are both in agreement — this is the most humid summer we’ve experienced in his time here. It’s nice that we’ve gotten plenty of rain after some recent dry years, but that hasn’t helped cool it down much. Even today, when it was in the low 80s tops for the whole ride, it was a sauna.

We did make an excellent discovery, however. We’ve been raving for quite some time about Yonsei bread — a beautiful bun filled with variations of cream. We’ve tried them all — regular, chocolate, melon (I don’t think Joon’s had that one yet), and our favorite, red bean and cream (the chocolate is a good second). Well, we were at our first (and it turns out, only) stop along the way, and as I was walking out, I spotted some Yonsei bread knockoffs by a company called “Breadique.” They were slightly smaller, less-filled, and less sweet. We decided they were actually better than Yonsei bread, which is a good thing. Yonsei bread is only available at CU, while Breadique can be found in GS25, so we’re covered double now. We’ve tried the bean and cream, and the strawberry so far. Both good. Chocolate is up next, and I’m sure it’s gonna be something special.

A beautiful sight to behold, and 2+1 right now…which is a bit rich, actually..
A satisfied customer.

Other than that, it was a mostly unremarkable ride. I did pull off a navigational feat. I was aiming for 63 miles, but didn’t plan the route at all. When we left in the morning I’d already resolved to go west (wind direction), but in a couple of spots, it was as simple as either going left or right — didn’t matter much to me. But I did some calculations from memory on distances, decided to turn toward home at 43 miles (actually made the turn at about 42 and a half, but I was too tired to care), and ended up at 63.36 miles.

Did suffer through one other thing — a few long flat stretches. One might think those would be nice enough — no hills, right? But when you’ve been pumping along for 5 straight miles with no variation — not hills on which to come out of the saddle, no downhills to catch a break and some wind — it begins to wear on one’s legs. I’m not a young kid anymore, and I’ll certainly be using the massage gun tonight…

A large LNG complex on the west coast.
There are times I preferred a cloudy sky…like every time the sun was beating down on me.
Can never pass up a good picture of cows.
Generally an interesting sky today.
…and that’s a wrap…
