A little known fact about me — I’m an honorary member of the US Coast Guard Chief’s Mess. I proudly wore my anchor on my dress uniform…albeit hidden on the inside pocket. I’m also one of the few members of the Air Force (I actually only know of two, but there could be more of course) who was awarded the Coast Guard Unit Commendation (with ‘O’ Device). I earned both the anchor and the commendation in two separate events, so it wasn’t even a one-time deal (I’ve also got 8 days of sea duty on my DD214).
Suffice it to say then that I have an affinity for my Coast Guard brothers and sisters. I’ve seen them up close and in action, and they’re no lightweights. I’ve been on a boat with them when I was the only one who wasn’t armed and wearing a vest; but with the Coast Guard on the job, I wasn’t worried either.

So when I see that today (August 4th) is the US Coast Guard’s birthday, I see no choice other than to have a good day on their behalf.
Happy birthday, US Coast Guard. Semper Paratus (which, contrary to what they told me, doesn’t mean “always forgotten”)!
Very cool
