Some time back, I got in on a deal for the New York Times — something like, “half price for a year,” I don’t remember exactly. And I like it. Despite the occasional lean toward the left (not terribly noticeable if you ask me), one has to admit — the Times employs some of the best reporters on the planet. You could read them just for that.
But you don’t have to be a subscriber to benefit from some of their best work. I’ve often written about something I’ve heard on their podcast, The Daily. I quite enjoy the in-depth work they do in explaining things that often matter. The Daily also does something called, “The Sunday Read,” which is a reading of a long-form article from a Times publication.
And it’s the most recent Sunday Read that has me writing this now. Titled, “The ‘E-Pimps’ of OnlyFans,” it tells us about a growing trend that adds a twist to the porn industry by capitalizing on the human desire for relationship. Whole rafts of people manipulating others out of their money by acting as the publicity and voices of porn (content) creators of the site “OnlyFans.” I’m nearly speechless in my attempts to write anything at all here (and thus the long intro talking about how I like the Times and their podcast. All I can really say is that I can add the story to the growing pile of evidence that humanity is just not what it’s stacked up to be.
Maybe someday I’ll get to a piece on that (not that I haven’t written enough of it already). For now, if you were to listen and come away with “what kind of people are we?” rather than “hey, that sounds like an easy way to make a buck,” there may be some hope for you.
I’m listening to the January 6th committee hearings and thinking “what kind of people are we?”
I’m considering writing something about history repeating itself. Like, with the rise of nationalist movements followed by the enforcement of certain para-groups — like Hitler and the Brown Shirts, Mao and the Red Guard. What colors do the Proud Boys use again? I think it’s a black polo with yellow accents…
