I’m glad President Biden saw fit to come to Korea this weekend. I hear he’s been catching some grief for “distracting people with Ukraine” when he should be worried about China.
Well, what can they say now? He spent two nights here and took off for Japan just an hour or so ago (from Osan). So yes, he’s spending time with China’s neighbors, assuring them of continued economic and military support. I think it was a good move, not just to silence the ignorance of critics, but more so to reassert America’s position as a world leader and not an unstable and unreliable ally.
But I’m really writing this because, while coming home through the Osan tollgate from lunch and a drive, the president’s [empty — he probably helicoptered into Osan] motorcade pulled up right behind me. I moved over and spent some time right next to one of his limos at a light. Micha waved at the woman driving, who smiled slightly and waved back. Micha was kind of tickled when she saw the same woman on TV while they were covering the president’s departure.

I suppose when one works with the US military and watches them being such a dominant force in the world for so long, one might take things for granted. But I must say, sitting at a light just a few feet from the president’s car, it was quite impressive. And so was the second one. And of course the black Suburbans and the two other unidentified vehicles (one with a strange, small dome on the top that I’m sure housed either communications equipment or countermeasures). Throw in the fleet of airplanes on base (I didn’t see them this time around — stayed away all weekend), and there was good reason to feel good about being an American.
