Saturday 100: East Seoul Century

We didn’t mean to get carried away, but we had to do it sooner or later. A year ago this very weekend I did my first 100-mile ride in over 20 years (and another one later in the year). So I knew I had it in me, but how often does one want to spend over eight hours on the road? Well, considering that I’ve got other things to do and a wife at home waiting, not that often. But it is something — a challenge to which I can rise. An opportunity to see new things. I’d say “bragging rights,” but what is there to brag about? I know people who do more than 100 and do it more regularly. On far fewer gears.

I just like riding, and every so often, I can afford to take the longer rides. But still, a decent fondo should do the job. As a matter of fact, having done the century, the fondo (only 100km) might feel like a walk in the park.

And yet…

Heading east on the south shore of the Han River, Lotte Tower in the background.
The Han River Park has these random statues. I didn’t even stop to take this picture, just snapped it while I was passing by.
On the north side of the Han, with the bridge we’d just crossed in the background.
They’re building yet another bridge across the Han.
The beautiful view upriver from P’aldang Bridge (which runs frighteningly high over the river). We will be riding up the shore to the right shortly.
The P’aldang Reservoir. It is absolutely beautiful.
Sure it’s only 9AM, but a sliced egg sandwich and chips is still a good brunch.
The way home, but still quite far to go.
Still 10 miles to go, but I guess it was time to celebrate with the end-of-ride ice cream.

Will that bridge eventually connect?
