Where in the world?

If you have any sense of random adventure at all, I’m going to do you a favor. I’m going to tell you about an incredibly fun game that drops you just about anywhere in the world and asks you to figure out where you are.

GeoGuessr.

The game is absolutely addicting, although I must say that in its current iteration, its quality has dropped somewhat.

There was a time where it was free and fun, then they made it limited play (you’d have to pay to get the full version), until they now seem to have settled on what you can get now — a free version, but not quite as fun. The controls to move around are a bit more difficult, and in playing a couple of games, I was dropped in the most unlikely of places with the worst camera work. Once, on a streamlined recumbent bike, another time on a paddle board in the middle of a canal, and another from what looked to be a cellphone camera held over some hiker’s head.

Still, it’s kind of fun and interesting to guess. There was a time you could play against others too, but of course, that’s behind the paywall now (looks to be a reasonable $1.99 a month, and you can play one classic game per day for free (pro-level) if you sign up to give it a try). My friend Jess and I would play against each other every so often. We had our own set of rules — primary of which was you could only make three moves before you had to guess. That way you had to collect as much information as possible from the street view (signs, languages, road markings, etc.) in a very limited space. Sometimes it would even come down to which way you went — you could go one way and suddenly come upon a street address that would give it away beautifully, while if you went the other way you got nothing. It was great fun, and we have some good memories traveling the world together.

Anyway, it’ll take a bit of exploring to figure out what I want to do with this. I leave it for months at a time, then something reminds me and I ring up Jess on Messenger for some fun. For now, it’s just a good site to visit every so often. Here’s the address for you: https://www.geoguessr.com/free Go there. Then go anywhere. You won’t be disappointed.

Here are some screen shots:

Look for clues. This is near an ocean or lake, and there’s something written on that blue barrel (the Spanish word for garbage can?). So we know it’s in a Spanish speaking country.
Jackpot! Two steps to the side and I see a sign which outright identifies where I am. Looks like Bolivia. I’ll type “Horca Del Inca” into Google and see where it takes me.
The result: sometimes you’re close (5,000 is max)…
But sometimes you’re not…oof.
The final tally of a game. Not bad. The guess I made in Taiwan was only 11 meters off.
