Back in January, I did a piece on a YouTube video about building a cabin on some back-acre farmland in Michigan. It was absolutely enthralling and I must say, over the few months that followed, I pretty much exhausted everything the guy (Dave Whipple/Bushradical) and his wife (Brooke/Girl in the Woods) put out on their channels, so the viewing tapered off by necessity.
But they’re also professional content-creators, so they know the necessity of keeping it going and keeping it interesting, and within the past week or so I’ve seen both a solo project done by Brooke, and now yet another cabin build (also solo, although there is a clip of Brooke in there so she must have stopped by for a visit) by Dave. The thing is, watching them work is just so satisfying and calming for me. They both not only have the talent to do the physical job at hand, but also the talent to edit and produce some pretty high-quality videos. I say this knowing that if I tried to do anything like it, it’d look like a serious hack-job (maybe not so much the building, but certainly the filming).
Anyway, I really recommend sitting down with a good cup of coffee and a little time to peruse their channels. Maybe it’s not your thing, but for me, it’s extremely appealing. They cover the gambit of setting up for remote living; from finding and buying good land, to clearing and building on it, to digging a well and powering the end result. They make it all seem so possible.
And maybe that’s their secret – there’s just enough of “Hey, I could do that!” in their work that it sucks you in and keeps you interested, even if you’d never really do it in a million years. Just the dream is enough sometimes.
