Random Sunday

Another easy day today, just right for the random…

A decent bake

Decided to bake a loaf of bread before church this morning, which worked out beautifully because I put it together and let it sit at a slow first rise while I was out. Came home, punched it down, formed it into a loaf, put it in the pan, then went to the commissary (on my bike with reusable shopping bags, which is always a satisfying feeling). Splurged on my favorite frozen pizza (I reviewed it long ago — Urban Pie), which would be the first pizza I’d eaten in months. But it’s Sunday, and Sundays are pretty much my “eat what you want” days.

It worked out pretty well for me actually — no room in the freezer meant I needed to bake the pizza right away, leaving the oven preheated for the bread, which I baked while eating the pizza.

No big bubbles today

In the meantime, Micha was cleaning a couple dozen abalone that she’d gotten through home shopping. We finished the pizza, put in the bread, and then sautéed some of the abalone in butter. Took the bread out, then headed out to pick up chestnuts. Came back to a bread sufficiently cooled to try, and it was one of my best loaves. Which isn’t saying much, but considering my ability to throw it together and have fresh-baked bread for the next few days (with peanut butter and honey), it’ll do.

Straight up, and pretty good, abalone sautéed in butter

The commissary trip was probably the low point of the day. They just don’t have what I need there. Thing is, they get it once every few months these days, and it sells out within a week to disappear for another few months. I’ve learned my lesson though. Next time I see it, I’m going to buy a three-month supply. And I’m not telling anyone else what it is either. Sadly, there are so many things there sold out for months at a time these days that I don’t think anyone will be able to guess.

So there’s a glimpse into my life on a random Sunday. And as is my new custom (for the second random time), I will leave you with a bad haiku:

The perfect fall day
With bread and abalone
