The possibilities…

I like solutions. So when I see someone coming up with an innovative way to tackle an issue — or just someone who has a plain-old good idea — I find room for a glimmer of hope.

An interesting NY Times article caught my eye this morning. It was about batteries. They’re learning how to make them smaller. They’re learning how to make them more powerful and efficient. And what they’re learning might open up new avenues for invention.

I love that. Even though I’m at a point where most technology has passed me by (and I don’t really mind that), I love seeing where we might be able to go with the new stuff. Not the gadgets so much, but the ways they make it happen. Gadgets never work the way they’re supposed to, but the tech that goes into them is a springboard for a boatload of other stuff. I’m not really a fan of the old way. I think about the 747. An incredible airplane when it was introduced in 1968. But it’s gone now. Why? Because innovations in materials, technology, and design made it obsolete. We figured something out with the 747. We made better things that are more efficient. Just like the moon landing — it got us thinking. So when I got on a flight from Seoul to Dallas a few years ago — a beautiful new 787 — it made me happy.

And articles about batteries make me happy too. They make me think of the possibilities…
