I’ve been a bit ambitious this year with my cycling goal. While I’ve previously gone for 5,000km (about 3,107 miles), last year I topped 4,000 miles (actually, about 4,179), so this year I decided just to go for 5,000. Yeah, like I said…a bit ambitious. But it’s there, and it’s helpful, and I’m already ahead of last year’s tally by about 200 miles, so there’s that going for me.
And it looks like I might hit a milestone of a 500 mile month here by the end of April — I’m only 17 miles or so from that with 3 days left. If I just commute to work all three days, I’ll get in about 16 miles, so we’ll see what I can do. I’d love to hit 500 just about every month this summer, but that might not be too practical once the weather heats up. I’m off caffeine, so we’ll see how the old BCFBs work out this summer (remember, the “BC” stands for “Black Coffee”). But I honestly have the energy right now that makes me think I might be able to pull it off without the caffeine kick. Or maybe I can half-caff it. We’ll see.
But the real milestone I’m talking about today is that I passed the 1/4 mark of this year’s goal — 1,250 miles — on tonight’s little jaunt around the base. Yeah, it would be best to do that in 1/4 of the year…which means by the end of March instead of the end of April, but the colder months slow me down quite a bit — can’t get out as much when the temps are freezing and the roads are icy. But the summers do pick up a bit, so I’m still hopeful that I can make up the distance. Plus I’ve got a few long rides planned this year.

We’ll see. It’s always good to have goals.
