Well, today’s ride was a bit more challenging. About twice the climbing as I’ve done recently, so of course a good workout. I did what I normally call the “Yongin Hills” route, but I added a little exploration on the east end. The hills slowed me down enough as it is, but when I do some exploring on unfamiliar farm roads and villages, that’ll slow me down even more. But it’s fun, and I like poking around like that.
I also came to a couple of conclusions. Before I even started the ride, I decided to order more of the Rock ‘n Roll Holy Cow chain lube. I think it’s a good investment being liberal with it every couple hundred miles. It keeps the chain quite clean, and I figure maybe a good scrubbing every five rides or so and I’ll be set.
The other conclusion came to me while I was riding. I’d been on the fence about flat pedals. I figure I’d use them for winter riding and then go back to my clipless in the summer. But I really like them. Maybe not the Crank Brothers that I have right now — when they get wet, they tend to slip a bit — but flat pedals overall. I’m getting used to positioning my feet wherever I want to, and I’m especially happy that they don’t require special shoes. Seriously — nothing so pleasurable as just hopping off the bike and walking normally. Flats are just plain better.
Saw some history and trees today, including a protected tree in Yongin that I hadn’t seen before. Other than the aches and tiredness, I’ll give this ride decent marks. 7 out of 10. Here are some pictures.
