Getting warmer…getting cooler

Well it got up into the 60s today, and so you’d think it was a great day for a ride. And it was. But it’s got me wondering.

Maybe I’m just not caught up from the winter lull, but it seems I just can’t keep up anymore. I don’t mind the distance, but seriously, on a half kilometer climb, it takes me twice as long to get up as anyone with which I ride.

Now, part of that is my style. I’m in it for the enjoyment more than anything. So I’m not gonna kill myself on the hills. But still, it’s a bit demoralizing. I mean, I feel sorry for the guys with which I ride. If I’m alone, then I’m having a perfectly good time. If it takes me 10 minutes to get up that hill, then so be it. I don’t know why the hurry.

But this leads me to continue considering a recumbent trike. The thing about the trike is that it takes its time climbing hills…but that’s exactly what I do with my road bike. If I’m going to be going up hills so slowly, I can’t see much difference between the recumbent and the road bike.

Been interested in this trike from Performer Cycles in Taiwan

And the recumbent gives you the opportunity to sit back and relax as you ride along, taking in the scenery as you go. That’s just so tempting to me.

So sure, the weather is getting warmer. But my enjoyment of the upright road bike is cooling off right now. Not to worry, but something to think about…

And here’s today’s ride, if you’re interested.
