Recommendation: The Expanse

When it comes to science fiction, there’s plenty out there. We can go way back I’m sure, but I think the first real solid space sci-fi piece as we know it today was 2001: A Space Odyssey. Yeah, maybe you think Star Wars was the first time you really got wowed by it, but Kubrick’s work on 2001 was truly phenomenal for its time. Space-quality stuff at a time when Star Trek was holding cheesy models up by a string.

But the stuff we’re seeing today is pretty good. Star Trek: Discovery has some incredible effects (although I’m not necessarily keen on the acting). The one that I really think hits it out of the park is on Amazon Prime — and its 5th season just came out: The Expanse.

Set mostly in space between Mars and Earth, The Expanse tells the story of interplanetary politics and intrigue against a backdrop of an interesting sci-fi plot that adds a factor of mystery to it. While I’m working on another much longer post, let me just recommend this to anyone who’s interested in the good stuff.

(the trailer says “Netflix,” but it’s been picked up by Amazon)
