Today started nicely, but not typically for a Saturday. I’m usually out on the road early once the weekend hits, but it’s just been getting too cold.
Regardless, I was already pretty much committed to setting out on my own today just for a little introspection. Sometimes I just have to get out and think. It’s relaxing, and since there isn’t any egg nog at the commissary yet with which to mix my Jameson’s, I think I was about due.
But as I was considering getting my bike ready to go out, I remembered something one of my riding partners said last week during our Wonju Monster ride — my cassette looked to be wobbling. And I also remembered why: When I’d replaced my broken spoke from the week before, I remember hearing a “snap” when I was torquing the cassette back onto the wheel. I knew right then what had happened — I’d snapped a spacer I’d put between the cassette and the hub just to keep the whole thing tight (I’d seen it recommended by someone who had a large cassette on his bike). So when I was told it looked wobbly, I knew exactly what was up — but had forgotten to fix it over the week.
So this morning I pulled it apart, and sure enough, the spacer was snapped and so the cassette was actually slightly out of line. This is why I couldn’t get it indexed properly before the ride last week — but then again, I’m not very good at indexing anyway, so it wasn’t entirely noticeable.
And so I fixed it, and it’s all much better, but by the time I was done, the desire for introspection had passed, so I dropped a message to Chris and Joon and got out with them.
And it was pretty nice for a change of plans…
